Nadia Chivers is completing her Master of Social Work at DePaul University and interning at Health and Medicine Policy Research Group. In her current internship she has researched care-giving, nursing home conversion, and issues affecting court-involved youth. She has previous experience working with survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence, and non-profit program evaluation. Upon earning her MSW, she plans to attend Valparaiso University School of Law and pursue a career in public interest law.
Although a 20-year-old federal mandate restricts the use of chemical restraints on nursing home residents, misuse and overuse of psychotropic drugs on residents is a substantial problem with dire consequences. This form of abuse has come to the attention of the Illinois Nursing Home Safety Task Force, which is currently developing a policy to assure appropriate use of psychotropic drugs in Illinois nursing homes.
